In Michail Michailov’s latest work “homeland” the artist presents himself and his environment (carto)graphically in his homelands. As a central issue he questions the meaning of terms such as homeland, migration and integration as well as the interconnected significance of identifications, fears and anxieties. Behavioral patterns such as belonging/ foreignness / exclusion/, camouflage/ adaptation and perpetrator-/ victimhood are made visible by the figurative meaning of animals. Animal individuals are being assembled densely into a collage. They are not standing each for its own; they form a compactly interlaced bulk. Parallel worlds graphically melt into a single entity. The performance “You want me, but …” broaches on the issue of society’s expectation and likewise societal dependence on immigrants.

In meiner Zeit als Assistent bei Gelitin war ich verantwortlich für die Herstellung von Plastilinbildern - unter anderem für Mona Lisa Portraits - für die ich einen speziellen Stil entwickelt habe. Um in diesen Werken meine künstlerische Freiheit noch stärker zum Ausdruck zu bringen, diente mir auch mein eigener Körper als Modell für die Schaffung der Mona Lisa Portraits, die ich so heimlich ‚mit signierte’. Ich habe mir dadurch eine eigene Welt geschaffen, in der ich als Künstler existieren konnte, wenngleich meine Werke am Kunstmarkt als Kunstwerke anderer Künstler auftauchen.

Als Abschluss dieses Projekts schaffe ich nun eine „originale Kopie von der Kopie im Original“, in dem ich als eigenständiger Künstler eine eigene „Mona Lisa“ schaffe, die gleichzeitig auch ein Selbstportrait von mir ist und mit meinen Namen unterzeichne. Dieses Paradoxon thematisiert die Frage nach dem Original, nach dem Wert des Kunstwerks und des Künstlernamens ebenso wie nach der Identität des Künstlers…
